Day 31 - Grand Canyon.... almost.

When we got up this morning, we were looking forward to seeing the Grand Canyon. We talked to a chap at the welcome center and he told us all our options- we could go to the northern rim, -kinda populated- the southern rim- really populated- or we could go to Toroweep. The road to Toroweep is 70 miles in a wilderness area and 4 wheel drive is required. It is the only spot where you can see the Colorado River at the bottom of the canyon. It is not populated. They have primitive camping and great sunsets. That sounded like us- so we went on our way to Toroweep.

We got tho the Ranger Station and saw a fellow walking. Since we had not seen anybody for 60 miles, we stopped to see what was going on. He asked us if we had jumper cables. We said sure we did and he jumped in the back. We drove to the ridge and found a blue truck. There was an older gentlemen and a little boy. They thought they had a battery problem and turns out it wasn't in gear and it wouldn't start. So, we were going back and forth, talking to them about what they wanted to do, and decided to all go back to the ranger station. We were 20 feet from the edge of the canyon and because we were so preoccupied, we never went to look. This is as close as we got.
On the way back to the ranger station, the grandpa, Melodee and the little boy sat in the front and me and the guy and Skeeter sat in the back, with all our stuff. The road was so rough and bouncy that the back window broke when the guy hit his head on it from a bump- so we lost our little back window. We took them into town and the guy's wife met the and because of our kindness to them, they put us up in a hotel. It was very nice of them .... but I was still slightly vexed that we didn't get to see the Grand Canyon.
